Embarking on a mission to enhance consumer safety and product quality, Brazil introduces Public Consultation No. 41, aimed at establishing rigorous technical requirements and test procedures for the conformity assessment of chargers used in cellular mobile phones.

This landmark consultation encompasses a wide range of cellphone chargers, including those powered by alternating current from the grid, direct current sources, inductive chargers, and specialized USB interfaces. By defining minimum standards for these chargers, Brazil aims to ensure their reliability, efficiency, and safety in everyday use.

Key standards applicable to vehicular cellphone chargers include ISO 10605/2008 and ISO 7637-2/2004, addressing electrical disturbances and transient conduction along supply lines. For inductive chargers, compliance with CFR FCC Part 18 is mandated, while other chargers must adhere to EMC and electrical safety tests outlined in ANATEL Act 1120 and Act 950, respectively.

A noteworthy requirement set to take effect from January 1st, 2024, mandates charger plugs to comply with specified dimension specifications, enhancing compatibility and usability for consumers. However, existing chargers approved before this date are exempt from this requirement, ensuring a smooth transition period.

Chargers undergoing certification must demonstrate resilience to mechanical, electrical, and thermal stresses typical of normal usage conditions, as outlined in the consultation document.

Stakeholders are invited to contribute their insights until November 14th, 2023, shaping the future landscape of cellphone charger safety and quality assurance in Brazil.

With implications on type approval processes, this consultation underscores Brazil’s commitment to fostering a marketplace where consumer welfare and technological innovation go hand in hand. Together, we pave the way for safer, more reliable cellphone charging solutions, empowering users and advancing industry standards.
