In a move aimed at ensuring quality and compliance in the telecommunications sector, ANATEL has introduced Act No. 9281, outlining essential technical requirements for certifying Smart TV Box products. Published in July, this act is designed to streamline the conformity assessment process for equipment falling under the Smart TV Box category.
Smart TV Box devices are defined by ANATEL as terminal equipment designed to access audiovisual content via the Internet and project it onto another screen-equipped device. Notably, this classification excludes personal computers, televisions, cell phones, tablets, and pay-TV equipment.
To obtain certification, these devices must adhere to a series of test requirements outlined in various acts, including those pertaining to radiofrequency (RF), electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and cybersecurity. Additionally, specific measures outlined in sections 5.1 and 5.2 aim to prevent content piracy exploitation through certified devices.
The act came into effect upon its publication in ANATEL’s Electronic Service Bulletin, with the mandatory application of its annex commencing on September 11, 2023.
This regulatory update impacts type approval processes for TV box devices, emphasizing the need for compliance with the newly established standards. While spectrum and imports remain unaffected, the importation of TV boxes into Brazil will be contingent upon ANATEL certification.
As Brazil continues to prioritize consumer protection and technological advancement, adherence to these standards will be crucial for manufacturers and importers of Smart TV Box devices. By aligning with ANATEL’s regulations, stakeholders can ensure the integrity and safety of telecommunications products in the Brazilian market.
