The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) of Singapore has updated its technical guidelines concerning Short Range Devices (SRDs) to ensure optimal functionality within authorized frequency bands while adhering to specified output power levels and operating conditions. These guidelines, outlined in detail in Table 1, serve as a cornerstone for the effective operation of SRDs, fostering spectrum sharing and accommodating various usage scenarios through flexible access mechanisms.

SRDs encompass a wide array of fixed, mobile, or portable stations equipped with radio frequency output connectors and antennas. Their applications span a diverse spectrum, including alarms, identification systems, radio detection, vehicle radar systems, wireless local area networks, remote controls, telemetry, and on-site paging systems. Embracing different modulation types and even speech applications, SRDs must comply with the technical requirements outlined in Table 1, with exceptions detailed in Table 2.

The updated specification, a result of a public consultation held in July 2023, introduces several noteworthy changes:

1. Expansion of RFID allowed bands from 920 – 925 MHz to 917 – 925 MHz (refer to Table 1).

2. Modification of access conditions for operation in the 5.15-5.25 GHz range, now requiring the exclusion of Transmit Power Control (TPC) and Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS).

3. Inclusion of WiFi 6E for operation in the 5.945 – 6.425 GHz range.

4. Introduction of mandatory compliance with IEC 62368-1 standards for equipment operating within SRD frequencies, including mobile/wearable devices such as tablets and mobile phones.

For further insights into these updates, please refer to Annex B: Addendum/Corrigendum.

This revision impacts type approval processes and spectrum utilization, while also setting standards for SRD operations. Its effects are far-reaching, influencing various products falling under the SRD category. Through these enhancements, IMDA reaffirms its commitment to fostering innovation and ensuring regulatory compliance within Singapore’s telecommunications landscape.
