The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has issued a public notice regarding the enforcement of the Mobile Device Management System (MDMS) effective from May 15, 2023.

According to NTA, registration of IMEI numbers to the MDMS is now mandatory for all mobile handsets and devices supporting cellular communication.

Importers and sellers of mobile devices must obtain pre-approval from the authority and register their devices with MDMS before distribution and sale. Only registered mobiles can be distributed and sold in the market.

This requirement impacts Type Approval holders, as all devices supporting cellular communication, including mobile handsets, GSM devices, and GPS navigation systems with cellular support, must have their IMEIs registered with NTA prior to import. The number of units registered should match the information provided during the renewal of the type approval certificate.

Type Approval processes and certificate renewal procedures will be affected by this mandate, while no impact is observed on spectrum allocation or standards compliance. Mobile and cellular communication device imports will now require an additional pre-import registration step to ensure compliance with NTA regulations.
