Recently, on March 7th, 2023, an agreement published in the Mexican official gazette by the Federal Telecommunications Institute classifies the frequency band 5925-6425 MHz as free spectrum. This agreement also establishes the technical operating conditions for systems operating within this band.
The technical operating conditions apply to low-power and very low-power systems operating in the 5925-6425 MHz frequency band. These systems must adhere to applicable technical regulations regarding equipment approval and corresponding technical provisions.
Low-power systems operating under the free spectrum modality are subject to specific technical operating conditions. They can only operate indoors, must feature an integrated non-removable antenna without external antenna connectivity, and are limited to a maximum channel bandwidth of 320 MHz. Additionally, usage in certain contexts such as unmanned aerial vehicles, ships, and automobiles is restricted.
Very low-power systems have similar restrictions and must comply with coexistence conditions to avoid harmful interference with licensed radio spectrum users.
The agreement impacts type approval processes, allowing for homologation certification requests for WiFi 6 devices through a “Dictamen Técnico” by a qualified expert. It also introduces the 5925-6425 MHz band as a new spectrum allocation in Mexico, potentially affecting future imports and commercialization of WiFi-6E devices without immediate NOM implications.
