The Department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) in Canada officially published Radio Standard Specification (RSS) 216, Issue 3, on September 3, 2024, replacing Issue 2. This specification covers “Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) Devices” and introduces the following key updates:

  • Maximum separation distance increased from 10 cm to 50 cm for WPT systems for electric vehicles, and from 10 cm to 20 cm for other WPT devices.
  • Maximum operation frequency raised from 400 MHz to 40 GHz, with additional limits for radiated emissions above 1 GHz.
  • Conditions for medical equipment removed; new requirements added for devices worn or implanted in the human body.
  • Adoption of ANSI C63.30‑2021 with specified deviations.
  • Clarification that RSS‑216 must be applied alongside RSS‑Gen and/or ICES‑Gen.
  • Requirements clarified for devices with multiple or wide power voltage ranges.
  • Definition clarified for industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) equipment.
  • Limits specified directly instead of referencing ICES‑001.
  • Alternative limits from RSS‑210 allowed under certain conditions.
  • Radio frequency exposure requirements referenced to RSS‑102.
