The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) issued a Final Rule on November 20, 2024, aimed at enhancing public safety communications in the 4940–4990 MHz (4.9 GHz) frequency band. The Rule clarifies the duties of the 4.9 GHz Band Manager, enabling them to request a nationwide overlay license and establish a sharing agreement with the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) to utilize unassigned spectrum in the 4.9 GHz band for the nationwide public safety broadband network (NPSBN). The Final Rule will take effect on December 20, 2024.
