The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States announced on January 7, 2026, that it will vote on an Order to create a new category of unlicensed devices, known as Geofenced Variable Power (GVP) devices, which would be allowed to operate outdoors at higher power levels to enhance unlicensed use in the 6 GHz frequency band.
