In a recent development, the Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority (BOCRA) has revised its Type Approval Guidelines for 2023, resulting in a notable exemption list for certain electronic equipment. This move aims to streamline processes and facilitate the usage of specific devices without the need for homologation. Here’s a breakdown of the updated exemptions:
1. Personal Computing Devices: Devices such as personal computers, laptops, tablets, and IoT gadgets embedded with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth transceivers are now exempt from type approval. It’s noteworthy that these devices must ensure Wi-Fi transceivers are Wi-Fi5 CERTIFIED™, ensuring compliance with established standards.
2. Receive-Only Equipment: Equipment categorized as receive-only, including FM/MW/SW radios, televisions, satellite decoders, and set-top boxes, are also included in the exemption list. This decision aims to ease the regulatory burden on such devices.
3. Vehicle Embedded RTTE: Various RTTE (Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment) embedded within vehicles, encompassing Bluetooth, navigation systems, remote sensors, and car keys, are now exempt. However, it’s essential for these devices to operate within the appropriate frequency bands to ensure seamless functionality.
4. GMPCS Mobile Satellite Terminals: Mobile satellite terminals bearing the “ITU” mark and falling under the GMPCS (Global Mobile Personal Communications by Satellite) category are granted exemption status. This acknowledgment aims to facilitate the use of such terminals without additional regulatory hurdles.
These exemptions apply to models of devices falling within the specified criteria. While this revision impacts type approval processes, it does not affect spectrum allocations or import regulations.
BOCRA is actively working on enhancing its platforms to provide interactive access to this exemption list and related information, ensuring stakeholders are well-informed and compliance is maintained.
This update signifies a concerted effort by BOCRA to adapt regulatory frameworks in alignment with technological advancements, fostering innovation and efficiency in Botswana’s electronic communications landscape.
