The Telecommunications Authority in Nicaragua (TELCOR) has issued Administrative Agreement No. 001-2023 on July 31, 2023, outlining provisions regarding the 900MHz band.
Key highlights of the agreement include:
- Successful Migration of Sound Broadcasting Operators: FM Sound Broadcasting Operators have completed their migration, thereby freeing up the frequency band 894-960 MHz.
- Allocation for Advanced Mobile Broadband Services: The frequency band 894-960 MHz is now allocated for advanced mobile broadband services, paving the way for enhanced connectivity and telecommunications capabilities.
- Ratification of SRD and LPWAN Device Usage: The use of the frequency range 915-928 MHz for Short-Range Devices (SRD) and Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN) devices operating at low power has been officially ratified. This decision aims to promote the deployment of IoT devices and other wireless applications.
- Permitted Import, Commercialization, and Use: Import, commercialization, and use of SRD and LPWAN devices operating in the range 915-928 MHz are now permitted, fostering innovation and technological advancements in Nicaragua’s telecommunications landscape.
- Repeal of Previous Administrative Agreement: Administrative Agreement Number 005/2021, issued on December 17, 2021, has been repealed to accommodate the new provisions outlined in the latest agreement.
While this agreement does not directly impact type approval processes or imports, it significantly influences spectrum allocation within the 900MHz band, particularly for SRD and LPWAN applications. Consequently, all SRD and LPWAN devices operating on the 900MHz band (915โ928 MHz) are affected by these regulatory changes.
By opening up the 900MHz band for advanced mobile broadband services and low-power wireless applications, Nicaragua aims to enhance connectivity, promote technological innovation, and foster the growth of IoT and wireless communication technologies within the country.
